The final precision, appearance, and demolding quality of medical silicone components largely depend on the level of mold design and manufacturing. Unlike plastic injection molding, silicone molding (especially LSR) has specific requirements for mold venting, runner balance, temperature distribution, and demolding structures. An excellent mold design can significantly reduce defects such as flash, short shots, air traps, and sticking, improving production efficiency and reducing scrap rates.

Key design considerations include:

  1. Cold runner system: Needle-valve cold runners are widely used in LSR injection to reduce material waste and prevent runner curing, maintaining low viscosity during cavity filling.
  2. Precision venting: For thin-walled or complex medical parts, venting grooves on the parting line or vacuum assistance are necessary to prevent trapped air that causes short shots or burns.
  3. Temperature control: Cavity surface temperature must be uniform; multi-zone independent temperature control ensures consistent curing speed.
  4. Demolding design: Medical silicone parts often feature undercuts, small holes, or soft thin areas, requiring ejector pins, air-assist, or slider mechanisms to avoid tearing.
  5. Mold material and coating: Corrosion-resistant stainless steel is preferred, with diamond-like carbon (DLC) or PTFE anti-stick coatings to extend mold life and reduce release agent usage.
